It’s called war. No one says the U.S. was committing genocide when they carpet bombed north Vietnam back to the Stone Age, waged chemical warfare, and burned children with napalm. No one says Russia was committing genocide when they erased Chechnya off the map, or raked Syria with white phosphorous, or blew up Ukrainian cancer hospitals. But sure, let’s hyperfocus on Israel because muh evil Jews
Have you seen any of the stats about what is happening? They have bombed the gaza strip more than any modern day conflict, killed more journalists than any modern day conflict. Have you seen the violence happening in the west bank? Why are you trying to normalize any war crimes anyway?
Wrong. Grozny was leveled to a far, far greater extent than Gaza ever has. Nothing about my comment contains normalization of war crimes. It does, however, distinguish casualty counts from genocide. Believe it or not—genocide is a real word with a real UN definition, not just a catch-all phrase for killing people.
Yeah and we know that the UN has found evidence of genocide & several experts and organizations have called it a genocide. Do you think we should get rid of the geneva convention & do you think collective punishment is okay? What is your response to my points about journalists being killed & violence in the west bank?
It is genocide when leaders express intent to destroy a people/ethnic group & take systemic measures to destroy them. If you don’t know that that is what is happening in Gaza, you should do more research. I appreciate you caring about these other instances of horrific war crimes being committed against vulnerable populations too, but yeah, no one is saying that other atrocities are okay when they say that what is happening in Gaza is unacceptable and horrific and is a genocide.
It is not a genocide. Genocide requires the intent to wholly destroy a religious, ethnic, or racial group. A country prosecuting a genocide against Palestinians would not have 2 million ethnic Palestinians living within its own borders as Israeli citizens. Notice how this is different from say, Nazi Germany, which not only eradicated Jews from within the Reich but demanded the deportation of those beyond its empire. And no, the Chechen wars was absolutely NOT a genocide.
Journalists being killed is irrelevant. They are no different from field medics being killed or civilians being killed. Russia has killed more Ukrainian journalists. Committing war crimes has nothing to do with the prosecution of genocide. Every country or nation-state ever that has fought a war has committed war crimes.
Okay so have you heard what people like Ben-Gvir are saying? They have absolutely very openly expressed intent to destroy Palestinians & have taken systemic measures to do so. Also, the 1948 genocide convention says “in whole or in part”. Do you really think it is normal wartime to trap millions of people in a tiny area & indiscriminately bomb them, shoot at them at aid sites, target essential infrastructure, systematically starve them, & intentionally target healthcare workers and journalists?
Strip all Palestinians living in Israel of their Israeli citizenship, round them up in ghettos for extermination or deportation. That’s how genocide works. Otherwise it’s just indiscriminate killing—which is something that has been present in nearly every large scale conflict. Also, if journalists are being systemically killed, they would be (at the very least) the target of domestic assassinations like in most totalitarian regimes.
Huh, well I guess most human rights organizations and the UN disagree with you on the definition. contradicts where you said “genocide is a real word with a real UN definition”. Anyway, yeah, I obviously don’t agree with your claim that the only reason people are upset is because they hate jews & neither does anyone else other than the people justifying ethnic cleansing and collective punishment (genocide)
