Hitler is viewed as being uniquely evil in Western history because he brought to Europe what Europeans had been doing to other people across the world for centuries.

I don’t think the take is Hitler wasn’t evil, I think it was that there are plenty of other people in history who are just as evil. I’m not sure how I feel about it tbh. There are figures like Leopold II who I feel like have an argument for being as evil Hitler, but Hitler also industrialized genocide on a scale not done before or since.

I’m not sure on OOP’s exact take, but at least one of the commenters thinks the holocaust “wasn’t really a big deal” And OOP didn’t protest that characterization

like clearly atrocities committed by western colonizers are whitewashed constantly. and much of that is due to propaganda and some of that is due to physical and cultural distance (ie the US has many many Holocaust survivors as immigrants so it’s part of our story) but I find “x Isn’t uniquely evil” tends to be a dogwhistle for erasure
