over half of my professors at a top 30 school were lowkey incompetent, ended up skipping lectures to watch MIT OpenCourseWare videos on the topic in several courses

a lot of them just want the research grants and begrudgingly teach on the side

like let’s put on our thinking caps here - would they BE a top 30 school if The People Doing The Schooling were incompetent? occam’s razor says…

They’re a top 30 school because of the research they publish. You’re only validating their point lmao

waitwaitwait. you’re telling me you had the opportunity to study with leading researchers - pioneers in their field - and your inability to take anything substantial away from that is THEIR fault?

if they primarily care about their research and only teach because it provides them the means to do their research, they might half-ass the teaching part. I did learn the course content after consulting other sources and did quite well. not sure what’s confusing about this

Just because they publish impactful research doesn’t mean they’re good at teaching material in an understandable way and able to engage with students 😭

exactly, and the undergrad courses they teach are sometimes only tangentially related to the specific field of research they enjoy

…. so now I’m confused, because I was always told that That’s Not What College Is For? That being “teaching material in an understandable way” College is for developing specialist skills by learning from accredited experts. My mother spent literal years prepping me to self study BECAUSE experts are FAMOUSLY shit at teaching. That’s not incompetence on a professor’s part. It’s THE STUDENT’S job to teach themselves how to suppliment course material with their own study (like Basket did!).

If the student is supposed to teach themselves then what the fuck are we paying the school so much for?
