Yeah that shit is kind of on Candide levels of awful, which is an actual comedic text about suffering. Real short too, highly recommend it if you haven’t read it. I’ve read it multiple times, takes me about an hour and a half to get through the whole thing. It is translated from French, so if you’re not used to reading French literature in English, expect lots and lots of adjectives. Voltaire’s funny as hell though. Great satirical takedown of Leibnizian Optimism.

I absolutely love reading French literature for how it paints a picture in the mind. Deeply descriptive people, the French. It can be a bit jarring to someone used to reading texts originally written in English though. Just because English is a strongly verb-based language, and French is more heavily noun-based, making adjectives the 2nd most important part of speech.
