Looking at it from a purely utilitarian perspective, it was Japan’s belief that the soviets were about to invade combined AND that the US had more nukes that stopped an invasion of mainland Japan that would have cost millions of civilian and military lives

They are still using Purple Hearts they made in preparation for operation downfall today btw. Estimated casualties were in the millions. Definitely justified.

They were different kinds of bad. Holocaust took place over years and killed many times more people, but this took place in about 2 minutes

The development of the atomic bomb and the decision to drop it took years and years of discussion and research and analysis

SINGLE acts. We’re talking about killing 200,000+ people with the press of a button here.

Do I think the atomic bombings were horrific and unjustified? Absolutely. Do I also recognize that the bombs (along with the threat of Soviet invasion) stopped potentially the largest loss of life in war in human history? Also absolutely. I think if you’re going to condemn the atomic bombs you must also condemn the firebombings of Japan that killed exponentially more people
