this is also why people are supporting or taking positions that can be perceived as supporting iran. i do however think it’s farrrrrrr more valid and understandable in that case in iran’s case i don’t think it’s “anti-western” per say but more so anti american imperialism and pro sovereignty for all foreign nations. you can argue western culture is inherently imperialistic which if that’s the position argued it would be anti western by that belief

Which would be an odd position to take and then support another imperialist power like Russia. Not poking holes in your assertion, just that there’s some complexity to geopolitics at times to unravel and examine.

for russia my understanding is it usually stems from being anti nato which funnily is a position the left and both republicans typically hold, although both hold it for completelyyyyy different reasons. i don’t personally understand the defense of russia myself but thats what i gather the reasoning is from people i’ve talked to or heard talk about it.

You’re definitely right, the issue is that NATO expansion occurred as a response to Russian aggression, not the other way around. Russian propaganda claims that the Russians are just acting in self defense as NATO aggressively gets closer and closer, when in reality Russia is attacking or threatening countries in their vicinity who then turn to NATO for protection. Russia screamed about Sweden and Finland joining when they’d both been neutral for decades before the invasion of Ukraine
