I think the killer was just a dumbass troll poisoned by the same kind of speech Kirk engaged in, and I think his wife is the same kind of psycho that Kirk was, who takes literally any opportunity they can to receive extra attention and money.

And as a psychopath, she masks and thinks that she needs to cry to express grief because that’s what she sees everyone else do, so she tries really hard to make it look like she’s crying, even though she isn’t they type of person to cry, which makes her grief SEEM less genuine, even though it probably is entirely genuine.
