Wild to me that conservatives that claim to love individualism are some of the most vocal opponents of dyed hair, tattoos, piercings, and unique clothing

Conservative men don’t like tattoos and piercings because if a woman has them it usually means she 18+, which is too old for them lmao

I can see why someone would be for or against individualism or collectivism, but what’s wrong with individual self-expression?

Individual self expression that violates social norms divides society

I think we have bigger problems to worry about than what someone wears or what tattoos/piercings someone has tbh. It can be more nuanced than just strict individualism or strict collectivism

That’s fairer than just disliking them because they differ from the norm

You’re right, I’m just saying the way you present yourself can be a social taboo and therefore is against collectivism

It can be but that doesn’t mean it should be, and the best way we can do work towards that is being accepting of people’s appearances, not just telling people to conform

Well that’s not working it’s keeping more division. We should hold people to standards

Just because it’s not working overnight it doesn’t mean it isn’t working at all and we should just throw it out. For example, 30 years ago, it would’ve been difficult to find a white collar job if you had visible tattoos; nowadays many employers (barring more conservative ones) wouldn’t think twice about most of them as long as they’re not offensive and aren’t face/hand tattoos. That happened because we became collectively became more accepting of tattoos, and that starts at an individual level

Plus, who, according to you, gets to set those standards?

250 years of individualism and the problem doesn’t get solved

You’re missing my point if you think I’m arguing for strict individualism

Caucasian males get to set those standards. So everyone else who isn’t white or a man are seen as an enemy and/or someone needing to be controlled. They’re convinced God put them in order of the Earth or something
