Tell me why the Fairness Doctrine was dismantled by SCOTUS and the Reagan administration when the previous SCOTUS ruling was that it wasn’t just constitutional, but it was NECESSARY TO UPHOLD OUR DEMOCRACY

Here’s some info from the Brennan Center. The voting rights act was designed to respond to Jim Crow and in response to discriminatory practices that were happening in the US South. Back then, it was much more prominent of an issue and was an appropriate response. Time has passed and people have forgotten/decided not to care about these issues anymore.

To my knowledge this Supreme Court decision didn’t overturn the VRA. It instead claims that under the VRA, the addition of a second Louisiana black district was a racial gerrymander against white people.

It’s still a pretty big issue As shown by like. The objectively discriminatory gerrymandering that’s going on right now in the US south…

Oh absolutely. Unfortunately, even though it IS a major problem, the people in power have decided that instead of thinking of the needs of the people, they want to accumulate more power through any means necessary. The only way to make gerrymandering illegal now would be to amend the constitution. I personally feel that this decision is one of the worst miscarriages of justice since Roe v. Wade was overturned.

Or I guess they partially gutted it on a constitutional basis? I’m not sure.

It seems like Alito’s opinion is that the VRA only requires one majority black district per state or something? And Clarence Thomas’s concurrence is that the VRA doesn’t require black districts at all?
