I voted no because I personally don’t know how different their institutions would be without European fuckery. To what extent would different kingdoms or settlements that existed prior to the slave trade have cooperated?
Africa would be the most prosperous continent on earth, if not for colonialism.

I would think they would be prosperous if they’d been given their own chance to form their own institutions and capitalize on their resources without exploitation.

Africa was significantly less prosperous than the rest of the world before colonialism began. That’s why a couple European countries managed to control an enormous continent.

Most prosperous? I voted no because the survey doesn’t allow for expression of uncertainty. There’s a case to be made for them figuring out governance and surpassing European or Asian institutional effectiveness. But trying to parse out how it would be difficult given the colonialism and exploitation in past and present.

Had they become most prosperous, it would’ve meant effective coordination with outside forces that didn’t come to subjugate but work out trade and cooperation. Not one society acts in a bubble without some outside cooperation. Globalization has been a concept for a while. We just have internet now.
