You’re thinking of the Whigs. Their strongest base was New England and the upper South (Tennessee, Kentucky, Maryland). They had a huge coalition that included people who didn’t like Freemasons or didn’t like Irish Catholics.

They’re cults. Theres a difference between people who meet to play chess and people who meet to plot social and political ploys and machinery and sometimes they do both. I strongly do not think people, specifically those in elite circles, should be able to meet behind closed doors and scheme. Thats literally what all the billionaires and all the sociopaths in Silicon Valley do now. It’s what elites have done for centuries.

Same reason I think every single room in Congress should be wiretapped and fed to a publicly accessible feed and that Congressional meetings must happen within public buildings. The rich and powerful are the ones that need to be surveilled, not us.

Extreme wealth has extremely isolating effects on those who have it. At a large enough distance from normal people, it functionally becomes a mental illness. Unfortunately, the courts have recognized it as such for the purposes of doling out lighter sentences to the children of socialites. But fortunately, that also means it’s a recognized condition. Quite a few billionaires should probably be separated from society in a place to seek care, because they’re not right in the head at all.
