The border is pretty big, and it’s hard to police all of it. There are lots of human rights concerns when you detain people who cross illegally. And you can’t just turn them around either (although he was essentially forced to until May 2023). They can apply for asylum and then they have the right to have their case heard
After Covid, most of the world fell into economic recession with HUGE inflation and unemployment and a lot of economic refugees flooded the border because our economy recovered much better (surprisingly bc of the biden admin lmfao). The democrats had a bipartisan immigration bill in 2024 that would have overhauled the immigration court and vetting system for migrants but republicans backstabbed to prevent giving democrats political victories.
Crime rates among immigrants even illegal ones are lower than even citizens actually, Trump and the mainstream media push individual cases of gang and violence by some immigrants who generally already have histories for political purposes (I think they should be rightfully deported) This is all to distract from him and his partners absorbing and locking away even more capital from the economy leaving less money and more economic problems for us regular folk. They then blame it all on immigrants
Like 95% of illegal immigrants are economic migrants or political asylees who do no harm and contribute greatly to our economy and make America stronger as a whole. IMO Biden’s bipartisan bill to overhaul the intake and court system was one of the best solutions for our immigration issue that would have preserved the American value of welcoming the poor while also keeping us safe from bad actors
