He can ask Congress to declare war, but it’s a legislative task

Apparently all action against Iran is already covered by the Authorization for Use of Military Force from way back in 2001

I mean, we don’t really declare war at all anymore. We didn’t declare war in Vietnam, those soldiers were *technically* drafted into WW2 because you need a declaration to authorize a draft. Trump might announce military action, but only congress can actually declare war. It’s just sort of an overstepping of boundaries that Congress has handed to the president (among many others).
