Crazy that atheists are prohibited from holding office in 8 states, even if it’s unenforceable. Imagine if like. 8 states prohibited Jews from holding office. The riots that would happen

Bruh even the founding fathers would be seething over this. Like one of their big things was literally the separation of church and state. If anything they were encouraging atheists in a way lol

So you’re allowed to run as long as you have any religious affiliation? Weird

I can probably guess which states. But that’s wild considering the establishment clause, wouldn’t you want non-religious politicians to be making non-religious legislation?

I’m a big state, right guy. You do you. It works for New Hampshire, they actually have third-party politicians.

It’s non-enforceable. And yes, theoretically, but we live in America. And yes you can guess like 6 of the states pretty easily

Yes, they explicitly have religious qualifications in their state constitution. In fact some of these states DID use these laws to prevent Jews from office in the past. But those are no longer on the books, even unofficially, New Hampshire in 1877 was the last one I think.

Was it specifically Jews excluded? Or just everyone who wasn’t a certain flavor of Protestant

I think most later required merely an affirmation of the monotheistic god of the Bible. This was true even of most states circa 1790.
