in some ways, i look at polytheistic religions and have a greater sense of respect for it. abrahamic religions like christianity say there just is this perfect benevolent omnipotent thing, its completely isolated from the world in every way but also isnt. impacts nothing but everything. something like greek gods were deeply tied to tangible things and some intangibles. poseidon, the god of the sea. demeter, agriculture. the gods were imperfect. life is imperfect, nature is imperfect
yeah how could anyone be stupid enough to believe in the 2000 year old religion follow by billions that formed the basis for like half of our culture’s moral values, symbolism, art, etc. and was practiced by the vast majority of the country’s population up until a generation ago. I was raised in an atheistic household and have zero trouble understanding why people believe this. get over yourself lol
the greek gods or those of many religions were just manifestations of nature, of parts of the world. believing in the greek pantheon isnt a moral highground or a "i want eternal life" necessarily, its just... seeing the world and making story out of it. maybe im jaded by a catholic upbringing but ive really always had a deeper appreciation for these things that arent a "to be perfect" type deal
i mean jesus and mary are both the same kinda situation as god, just more tangible manifestations of the perfect benevolent being, with less power. theres valuable wisdom to be learned in the stories but in the end its another perfect being that arbitrarily has answers to everything but actually nothing. the result is a bunch of people claiming to have a connection to that perfectness and being worshipped for it, be that saints, visionaries, popes, whoever
if you claimed connection to zeus or ra or whoever, people would expect tragedy and you to be brash and unwise. the idea of perfection is, to me, deeply unnatural. balance is not perfection, it is often chaotic, but it is natural, it is real. im not versed in eastern philosophies but as i understand it, they appeal more to me, and the ideas that (i think) it has contradicts a lot of these concepts of perfect beings
