I think there are different feelings about a land acknowledgment depending on the context. Like my school (in Virginia) has a land acknowledgment that the tribes were supportive of. HOWEVER, there’s a bunch of weird shit involved with that

In Virginia, tribal politics is dominated by the seeking of recognition. Virginia’s native communities were assimilated a long time ago, and with 2 exceptions, ceased to exist as organized tribes until the 20th century. So what the descendants of native Americans in Virginia care about the most is people knowing that they exist and believing that they are Indians.

Hence, my schools land acknowledgement is reminding people that they exist, and that fulfills their main goal. Meanwhile the Navajo or the Sioux are not worried about people knowing they exist so much as economic and social improvement. Everyone already knows they exist and believes them to be native.

One of the things that’s really weird about my college’s (William & Mary) land acknowledgement is that it names every single tribe currently recognized by the state of Virginia, across the entire state. When really only the Chickahominy and the Powhatan (now the Pamunkey) were local. Though I guess there’s other Powhatan-descended tribes so they probably just didn’t want to deal with tribal politics bs.
