The worst part about this is that you’re actually OVERESTIMATING how many countries don’t have paid leave. It’s actually less than 10 😭og_beer
Friendly reminder only 5% of countries in the world do not have paid maternity leave. That’s a total of 10 countries! Only 10! 95% of the world has paid maternity leave! The United States does not, have paid maternity leave. It is the bottom 5%Nations with with populations the size of one American small city….and then the richest country in the world 😂 I’m all about a market economy, but there really is no excuse for no maternity leave at the federal level. The only people against this have to be like the hardest of hardcore capitalists.
Not even capitalists, they’d support it bc it keeps kids affordable, meaning constant flow of labor, and happy employees that breed efficiency. Well true capitalists that is. Capitalists build capital, which is long term thinking. It’s the hardcore corporationalists that use late stage capitalism to their fullest advantage, which is short term maximization only. And American’s inability to revolutionize. Bully France all you want but they would firebomb the Walmart if you know what I mean
Sure, I mean that’s one argument you think even capitalists would be behind, but they’re just not. I know the biggest argument against paid maternal leave is it essentially fucks small businesses really hard due to not having an overlapping workforce. I think it could also potentially lead to labor market distortions by viewing women as an expected cost…but the positives of it outweigh those cons imo.
Maternity leave can be subsidized by the gov. Or paid for completely and directly from the gov if your business is small enough. And if anyone bitches about our taxes increasing our tax burden is higher than socialized healthcare, we just have to stop shipping our tax dollars overseas paying for other nations healthcare and maternity leave
France is just not in a good place right now. The amount of public spending they do is insane and their heavy reliance on debt makes it so they crowd out their private sector and limits their fiscal flexibility. Their social class shit is also insanely fucked. They might burn shit down, but it still doesn’t do anything for them because their political elite govern around them. That’s the problem with too much protesting.
I think taxes raising are fine. I think it’s just the possibility of taking it from both ends. First you’re taxed, and then you lose a worker so you’re not as productive. That can kill small businesses. I feel like they would have to somehow subsidize smaller businesses (under 50 employees) and have the larger corporations cover smaller businesses share.
But they wouldn’t put up with the literal scraps we get thrown. 2 weeks paid vacation time IF you’re lucky? No pto for sick leave is pretty standard (or they make you have your vacation days). No federal protections for ignoring your boss outside working hours. They protest hard about a lot of shit, but they got the important stuff while we roll over and let the elite beat us to death
That’s why I said small businesses shouldn’t even have the burden of paying the employee, the government should cover 100% of their salary for the entire time of their leave. (Or a layered system like some governments do, 100% for X weeks, 70% for X weeks, etc etc) Though personally I’d set the threshold closer to the 20-30 range. If you got 50 employees and can’t rearrange task allocation for a few months you deserve to fail ngl
