genuine question: why do people want to hear from celebrities about social/political issues? It’s not like they have the power to do anything about it. Plus ppl nowadays are more likely to unstan for different beliefs than change their minds.

It’s because people identify with celebrities and understand that star power is a form of power, however minimal. I personally think if you’re an artist and wanna preach your politics to me, you should do it through your art and not just a speech, since that’s what you’re good at. But yeah people just wanna see their values reflected by the celebrities they like, and hope someone else comes to those beliefs by exposure to them once they get put on that person’s MASSIVE platform.

i think it’s more that they have a platform to potentially shift people’s minds on an issue. i know it sounds ridiculous (cuz it kinda is) but there are a lot of people who may only hear abt politics if their fav talks abt it. the bigger issue is most celebrities have bad politics bc they’re rich and out of touch

I hate so many of my faves’ politics lmao being a New Wave/Post-Punk fan is when every musician you love is either the MOST based or a Thatcherite (or just a WEIRDO like Morrissey where his beliefs are incomprehensible and piss off every possible side of the aisle)

And as far as artists who’s politics I really fw it’s Rage Against The Machine and The Dead Kennedys and shit, but those people’s songs themselves are political, so it’s not like “listening to them knowing they believe this” it’s “listening to them sing about this”
