Whenever i find those people I essentially challenge them to live without Fox News Entertainment (bc it is NOT A NEWS SOURCE) for a year and end it with “I know that will be nearly impossible for you…” and usually that gets them riled up. I always respond with sharing the challenge by not watching ANY major news network myself, but implore them to explore other real news networks or ONLY read the common newspapers.
It isn’t a semantics game, it’s the development of history. Capitalism could not have come about without mercantilist colonialism, nor mercantilist colonialism without feudalism (with sone steps in between). One system develops out from another. Socialism is the system which develops out of capitalism.
This is a common misconception. Socialism is not like Veganism. What i mean by this is, it’s not a choice I make on an individual basis because i morally object to something. Systemic change does not come about by individual action. As a socialist, I’d like to see capitalism give way to socialism. However, until that happens, I cannot “opt out” of capitalism. None of us can.
Because the developed nations are instruments of the global ruling class. The global north benefits from the exploitation of the global south, while the global south does not benefit. This is why postcolonial countries reject capitalism. We lack class consciousness in the global north (this is intentional), thus socialism hasn’t taken root here.
The part that I saw was “if you’re anti capitalism and you’re still practicing it…”. I am also talking about systemic change. But until you change the system, you have to participate in the system, that’s just how it works. Because of the implicit threat of homelessness and starvation, I must have a job.
“Great man theory” is one of my main gripes with liberalism. The necessary change won’t happen if we “just elect the right people”. This approach is flawed because these people won’t address the root causes of the injustice of the system. They simply do not have the ability to do so.
As an example of this, take private ownership. Because the means of labor are owned by individuals and conglomerates rather than the people who work them, they can extract from the laborers in the form of surplus value (the value the laborers create minus the value of their wage). This is a necessary component of capitalism, and one which is fundamentally unequal. How would an elected official address this?
I resent when people say things“this has already been done and tried”. Before the United States existed, democracy and elections had already been “done and tried”. However, the United States still emerged as an electoral nation. It observed the old nations and made improvements on them. So it is with socialism.
Not rlly the United States was extremely unique in many different ways and was one of the First Nations rlly built purposefully on enlightenment values and it became the most successful country on earth. If we got into the specifics we could talk about how countries were successful even despite of socialist policies (even though they were broadly a failure).
“broadly unsuccessful” as if hundreds of millions weren’t raised up from poverty, as if there isn’t a consistent trend of literacy rates climbing upon the start of socialist rule, as if homeownership and education doesn’t consistently shoot up. These things happen even under sanctions by the United States. Smh
