Genuine question but why do trans men and women have such a different perspective about hrt Like trans men feel not only much more cautious but also more easily misinformed about diy And trans women see it as a basic first step (Usually)

there’s a specific cultural narrative around “irreversible damage” and testosterone from TERFs that specifically targets ftm transition. fearmongering around DIY usually related to the fact that t is a scheduled drug in the US, while estrogen/progesterone are more available (black market vs grey market).

The effects of testosterone are usually much more apparent and more difficult to hide if needed, and it’s a controlled substance so carries higher potential legal ramifications if not obtained via prescription

tbc when i’m referencing “irreversible damage” it’s in large part reflected in/a result of this book. wrt to DIY: yeah lol i know that. just explaining that the reason a lot of people are resistant to it/hostile is a kneejerk negative reaction bc it’s illegal.

statistically, trans women are more common than trans men. idk if that has anything to do with it, possibly also the abilities and access people had to HRT in the past. while not easy for everyone, it has been historically more prevalent that trans women use medications and trans men just do what they can. idk, might be talking out of my ass but could have some weight

I mean I guess with the first one but that also exists for trans women a bunch too thou prob not as much And with diy apparently the dude who set up the trans man diy guide got a bunch of threats from other trans men and like it isn’t that hard to find trans sources of diy t so idk what’s going on there

i mean, the narrative around transfemme transition from a TERF perspective is a lot different (usually approaches it as a fetish) vs the simultaneously paternalistic + misogynistic narrative around ftm transition (that “girls” are just confused, that they’ll damage their “perfect” “womanly” bodies). transfemmes are framed as predators while transmascs are framed as victims. it also means a lot of people repeat TERF rhetoric out of “concern” for transmascs without realizing it.

But also with diy e is just as illegal as t in most counties other than America but they still seem to keep the same culture Like a trans girl friend of mine in France was under police investigation because she admitted to touching diy to her therapist and she just acted like that’s normal and happens

ugh that’s horrible. but yes, the majority of online conversations regarding transition/DIY presume an American context. i’ve followed UK TERF politics for several years (don’t recommend) bc they’re really a bellweather for the backslide on trans rights in the US. people rlly should be more aware of what transition looks like globally.
