Are nonbinary people under the trans umbrella? (Genuine question because I thought we were and then I saw a lot of people saying that we weren’t)

nonbinary people are under the trans umbrella, however, some individual nonbinary people do not identify as trans.

there’s no definitive answer since language is prescriptive not descriptive, especially for identity

depends what you mean by 'trans'. transgender? sure. but transsexual? almost always no. i have met a few exceptions though

part of the reason for the confusion is transphobia toward nonbinary people, part of the reason for the confusion is because some nonbinary people don’t identify as trans. it’s helpful to recall that historically the shorted trans* is an umbrella term that was meant to unify transgender, transsexual, and transvestite experiences, but currently people use trans as shorthand for transgender. which, definitionally, nonbinary people are transgender as their gender does not align with their ASAB.

the trans* (asterisk) is a relic of early internet search functions, sometimes you’ll see it in other terms/communities (ex. veg*n is inclusive of vegan + vegetarian).

honestly i’m so tired of cis nonbinary people. i don’t get it. it makes it so fucking hard to explain to people yes i’m actually trans, nonbinary people are trans, when the nonbinary people they’ve met have said they’re not trans. like wtf.

not OP but i’m genderqueer and most assuredly transsexual :p. not nb ofc but i do think there are more nb/genderqueer people who are transsexual, but we often get lumped in with binary trans people. someone may have sex dysphoria but little to no preference for gendered social roles,so when transitioning sex, as a side effect their social role changes, but they may dgaf because it’s their sex that causes distress. or simply they ID closer to one gender but not completely or want mixed sex traits

there’s entire communities of people who want to change their sex to something ambiguous (altersex) or specifically both (salmacian) which i would consider a type of being transsexual as well. of course, just like being transsexual, any sort of gender could be altersex/salmacian, so there are also cis people and binary transgender ppl who seek this. but definitely a lot of nonbinary/genderfluid/genderqueer people as well.

this is slightly unrelated but i am soooo conceptually interested in cis men/women who pursue SRS/GRS. because they do exist (quite rarely)!! it’s just so fascinating to me the extremely wide variation humans have in regards to modifying their sex and sex traits, what leads different people to it.
