it’s an outdated term (when used like that) which is indicative of an uninformed viewpoint. even if she’s not hostile it gives off a bad impression

the word has been reclaimed to refer to a more specific category of trans people! though, i kinda doubt OPs mom understands the nuance between the terms and meant it that way. still important to recognize that transsexual people do exist and identify as such:)

Yeah this is kinda the point, I understand that trans people have reclaimed it but I know she doesn’t understand the nuance and it just felt weird hearing her say it
