this might be a stupid question but how do you discuss something with an alter? i thought only one alter could be fully present at a time.

Depends on the system. Some are group conscious, some are singular consciousness. For ones that are group conscious, conversations happens quite often. For singular conscious systems I’ve seen alters write eachother letters or text to record thoughts and converse. We are very good at finding ways to adapt to the environment we’re placed in. Systems are no exception!
