How on earth do I start trying for top surgery in general? I moved states so I’ve just got my insurance figured out and literally have no doctors yet (not even a PCP). Where can I find resources about the whole process?

i would call around to assorted plastic surgeons' offices that are in network with your insurance. your insurance will (should) provide a list of them, either by calling the phone number on the back of your insurance card or on their website under a "find a provider" function. i know the two big hospital systems near me took my insurance, so i just called the offices and told them i was looking for a consultation for top surgery so i got an appointment as soon as possible.i made sure to say that

I think depends on the state, but planned parenthood is wicked helpful if you don’t have a PCP

my BMI is over 35 (i think it was 40 at the time) bc that's usually where surgeons will say you have to lose weight before getting surgery, so the dr i went with has no BMI limit (loved her).

surgeons and insurance will also typically have a policy that requires at least one letter of support from a mental health provider. what that requires varies, but generally it's a letter that says "i as the provider have seen this client who has described these symptoms and i attest that i believe surgery would be the correct choice for them". my insurance has a webpage that i found by googling "[name of insurance company] policy gender affirming surgery mastectomy" that lists their requirement
