it sucks because it depends on country and state

highkey I suggest finding a pro bono lawyer and having them help you

i changed mine when i was 18 with only my parents’ assistance. i’m from WV so while it wasn’t the easiest it could’ve been it wasn’t that bad. for me, i had to fill out a form at the courthouse first, then post my court date in the local newspaper. i had a very short session in family court where i swore to told the truth and said i wasn’t changing my name to evade the law or anything like that. judge approved and i was out of there in like less than 5 minutes

I'm seconding this but one of the basic steps in the U.S. no matter the state is you generally need a finger print based FBI background check (effectively to make sure you aren't running from the law). some states also require a state background check, and then it's usually just a matter of submitting documents to the court. generally the hardest part isn't actually getting the legal name change, but changing all related documents that have your name (license, social security, bank things, etc.)

pro bono means they’re representing you for free, you just pay filing fees. where I am, everything (including the fingerprints and background checks) was about $200-$250.

tbh a lawyer is really not necessary in most places unless they have a super complicated name change process

i’d suggest finding a local lgbt center to find both community and resources, they’ll probably know more about what you’re legally able to do. more states are trying to make it harder to change your name and gender marker on government IDs

it’s not necessary to get a lawyer but I can attest that it made the process a lot faster and easier, plus it gave me the peace of mind that I was doing everything as correct and neat as possible

these two resources seem helpful. if you look up legal aid organizations and/or queer advocacy organizations local to you, many of them have created guides and some have workshops to walk you through the process.
