Guys any advice? 😩 My mom thinks medical transition is bodily mutilation (ie hrt and mastectomies), I can’t be trusted to make decisions for myself until I’m 30 (I’m 20), and I also can’t make decisions for myself while I’m mentally ill

She’s open to researching but says she has to look at both sides meaning she’ll be consuming transphobic information too 💀 (she also thinks trans people are just gay and confused)

I’m not gonna lie I don’t think it’s worth it to pause your progresss because of this because while it’s possible for her to learn and change it likely won’t be immediate. I’d suggest just ignoring her and doing it anyways as long as that’s something you can do safety-wise. Hell if she doesn’t want you using her insurance for it just do DIY. You don’t even have to tell her at first. Also “you’re not able to make your own decisions till you’re 30” is insane that’s a reasonable age to get married😭

Homie/Homette, you are independent as a 20 year old and it’s up to your judgement, not hers

Don’t transition yet?

How are they preventing you from making decisions for yourself until you’re 30 (I know it’s possible I’m asking to determine how much control they have)? Does this also prevent you from moving out after you finish college?

Basically. Don’t listen to her. What she’s saying is just flatly wrong and she doesn’t deserve that level of control over your life. Do whatever you want with your transition that your situation allows for :3 if you’re like me and have family who won’t cut you off or punish you even if you disobey them. Then just do it anyways.

Also like??? Transitioning will literally help with mental illness. Idk none of what she’s saying is logical.

Thank you for helping me feel sane, all she does is contradict herself and when I ask her to explain she can’t

EXACTLY but she thinks if I medically transition while mentally ill then I’ll regret transitioning when my mental health improves so I can’t win with her

I’m also in college (out of state) for another three semesters and am lowkey scared my parents will pull me out if I even attempt to transition (bc they pay for my tuition rn)

and yet they (and me) are in this predicament. it's not about age.

to be honest, i think you have to give up on winning her over. i don't know if you are in a stable enough position to do that, but if at all you can transition, i would. even just having a group she doesn't know about where you're addressed as who you are is life changing.

I know dude I’m trying not to completely destroy my relationship with my parents and I also need to finish college, they pay for it

No yeah I know, obviously I can’t do that, but does anyone have any good arguments to make that might help sway my parents to be more open minded about this stuff That’s the kind of advice I’m looking for

She’s completely ruined my confidence in my ability to make decisions for myself and made me fear to do so. I just gotta work through that I guess -Homie

yeah also this is part of why it was such agony for me. i was able to get free college through my parents and my college fund and grants and while that is an enormous privilege in and of itself which i am very aware of and thankful for, i was terrified of losing it. i was making disaster plans for if i had to go on medicaid and who i could live with if they cut me off
