I work at a summer camp and have my hair in a short mohawk, some of my younger kids ask if I’m a boy or a girl and I’ve answered all of them with “somewhere in the middle” and other counselors look at me with horror because why would I tell them that

Every single child, all of them with zero exceptions, have had the same reaction: they say “oh okay!” And all but one have walked away and continued playing, the one who didn’t go play said “oh okay, because you look like a boy but sound like a girl?” And I told him “yep!, pretty much” and that was enough for him and he went to play too

Kids, when not poisoned by bigotry and hate, don’t really give a shit

One kid did later come up and ask me “were you a baby girl or a baby boy?” And I asked her why she was asking. she said she was nosy. I told her I was a baby girl. she asked how I turned into something in the middle. I told her I just grew up and it felt better to be in the middle than to be a girl or a boy. She nodded about it and then went back to playing cops and robbers with the other kids
