Large data centres can consume as much water in a day as a city of 50,000 people. Every 100 words is a full water bottle of consumption. Millions of queries every single day. ChatGPT alone uses enough electricity in a day to charge 8 million phones. Many centres don’t even keep track of their electricity and water consumption. Communities have been told to cut back on their water consumption so data centres can use more. It’s often inaccurate, it hallucinates, it steals, it ravages resources.
My prosthetic leg also uses AI to help going up and down stairs… I guess I should just struggle with that too. Definitely the climate change issue would be fixed by those things not the fact if I want to recycle I’m driving 70 miles (not in an electric car because I can’t afford that) to the nearest plant because the one in my town never rebuilt after a tornado last year and that’s the next closest.
