Fighting for the wrong reason in a war that shouldn’t be happening. While I hope no harm comes to you, this is foolish.

You’re free to have your opinion, but you don’t get to decide my reasons. I’m enlisting to better myself, to honor the legacy of the men in my family who served before me, and to be part of something greater than myself. Those reasons are enough for me.

Best of luck to you, unfortunately some people don’t have the courage to be patriotic or support this country. You’re doing the right thing.

Despite their worry which is understandable, I’m doing this to make them proud and myself proud as well. They’re concerned but accepting and proud of the choice I made. Making them proud makes me proud.

No offense, but you’re going overseas into a life and death situation for a president that declared war illegally and literally said this about you just so he can maybe lower gas prices in the future maybe

Not for a man but for our people, for what good it may bring our nation. It’s not about what this country can do for you but what you can do for this country.

I know you mean well OP, stay safe and honestly try to do as little harm as possible. This isn’t a just war of good guys and bad guys. The best thing you can do, besides not going, is just finish up as quickly as possible and contribute in support roles. Don’t aspire to fight and kill like that psychopath pete hegseth encourages. I promise the people in your family who came before you would be disgusted by him. My grandpa fought in ww2 and I know he would be.

But you’re not gonna do any good for our county. It’s the Middle East! It’s on the other side of the world! Stay safe and idk I hope you make it, statistically you will. If you see some fucked shit, try not to let it become normal.

I want to be clear about something: enlisting doesn’t mean I blindly support every decision a president makes or every alliance our government has. For me service isn’t about pledging loyalty to a politician. It’s about committing to bettering yourself

Just because I’m enlisting doesn’t mean I blindly support a certain political or the decision he makes or our allies. I’m doing this to better myself, and hell do some good for the country while I’m at it. In my eyes they’re both bad, there is no real good guy in this situation. But I’ll do my best to do right by our people if I can, and bring honor and pride to my family while I’m at it.

Why not join the peace corps then? AmeriCorps, which is the domestic version. Or countless other organizations like that. Frankly I don’t think this country, institutionally, deserves your military service. But the people do, as you say. There’s other ways of bettering yourself and helping people at the same time that don’t involve giving yourself to the war machine

Don’t be swayed by the concept of Warrior Pride that gets associated with the military. Realistically its more mundane than that and if you did see combat for whatever reason, like if the war escalates, you’ll wish to god for the rest of your life that you hadn’t. Its my understanding that theres still time to back out of a military contract before shipping out. Just seriously consider these things and consider what your parents are saying. Its your choice & your life ultimately but be wise w it

Then the next 20 year old kid who means well. Or 30 year old who needs benefits and student loan repayment. Or 40 year old trying to streamline a career. We have no shortage of people and our nation isn’t under attack at all. We’re the ones attacking. Genuinely go out and try to find iraq war vets who are no longer in the service. Ask them if they’d recommend enlisting, even if its just in a role nowhere near the middle east. Even if you’re not in danger, the ideology you’re supporting is fucked

I’m not supporting any ideology other than bettering myself, it just sounds like you’re anti military

You can tell yourself that in your mind but your actions will prove otherwise. You are supporting the ideology of illegal war and military aggression in whatever job they give you. Because you are physically helping in supporting the war. Even if your personal beliefs are different. You are figuratively (or literally, idk what your role will be) loading the guns even if you’re not directly pulling the trigger

1000 people have died in iran already and most are civilians. Its barely been a week and they’re saying it could last through september. Then when September comes they’ll push it back further. How many will be dead by then? Why would you volunteer to contribute to that death toll when our country isn’t in danger? It’s not self defense. You absolutely can better yourself in other ways that don’t involve signing a legally binding contract

Fully agree with you 11, but you’re not gonna change his mind by telling him it’s imperialistic. In fact you’re not gonna change his mind at all. If anything us arguing with him is just setting him further in his ways. He needs someone in real life to tell him this is a bad idea
