like yeah italians weren’t treated well in america at first but neither were the irish and you don’t see them not claiming to be white even when they weren’t considered white at first

i fully consider spaniards to be white. some people call them zesty white! you can also have the ability to tan and still be white. my mother has deep olive skin that tans beautifully in the summer but is still white. my best friend gets confused as brazilian because she has dark curly hair and also olive and tans but guess what! still white! i’m also talking about italian americans mostly in this post to be more specific. i am aware that there is a difference between nationality and ethnicity

Italy is more Mediterranean than a lot of the EU countries so I can understand why they differentiate. I don’t consider Greeks or Turks white necessarily either for that same reason Nor Spanish/Portuguese, but again these are all technically European so you may need to broaden your sights a bit.

whiteness is whatever society thinks it is at any given time (source: i just took a class on this and it all boils down to the fact that race is a social construct and can change with the times)

Yes exactly, at times in American history Germans weren’t considered white. Now they are. Whiteness is defined by what it is not. It’s an exclusionary term and the subjects of the exclusion change based on the politics and “in-groups” of the time
