Having kids just to have someone around when you’re old is selfish, and you can’t expect them to stick around anyway. They aren’t obligated to do so. I have plenty of loving friends, family, an amazing partner, and pets. I would much rather live my life in a way that is fulfilling to me than to have a child I absolutely do not want, and having a child would prevent that fulfillment for me.
Not that I or anyone else has to explain their reason to be childless, but here’s a few that I know would make me a selfish mother: my partner is a pilot and would be an absent father half the year, we both have health issues that would be passed on, we have mental illness that would inevitably traumatize a child, we want to travel, neither of us have any instinct to raise children. Maturity is knowing when you’re not fit to parent even if you really want to, which we don’t.
where did you read that I was anti-kid? children are great, people should have them if they feel so led. what people shouldn’t do is pressure anyone, especially women in this case since their physical body is what births the children, into making life-altering decisions under the assumption that otherwise they’ll be lonely.
