People have severely trivialized what it really means to be autistic. Its like people claiming to have OCD in 2015

I hate self diagnosis and pop psychology more than anything i stg. Youre not autistic youre just kind of mean and aloof that is not the same thing. Tiktok is not the DSM

Eh, I’d argue everyone is but there are levels to it. Like someone who just fidgets with their pen isn’t the same as someone who is nonverbal. I think the term would be better understood if instead of autistic, it was changed to neurodivergent or a more broader term

Heard someone refer to themselves as “neurospicy” cause they had a “niche” interest in horror movies like are you being fucking for real

Exactly. While I like the effort in de-stigmatizing it, it is not something to just be taken lightly

As someone who’s autistic when I hear this I LOVE saying “ok then how are you autistic?” and watching them squirm and try to answer it’s so fucking funny

its so frustrating seeing this type of weird trivializing sentiment especially stuff online and on dating apps where people will be like "i want a girl with a touch of the 'tism" knowing they mean someone who has interests and not somebody who Actually has autism. its the new version of OCD and clinical depression where a mental illness or neurodivergence becomes "trendy" somehow without ever actually factoring in the condition itself 😭

We can all be quirky, have interests, sensory preferences but we don’t all have social issues, emotional regulation, and sensory issues. Funny with autism not all people are the same but we aren’t all autistic. I’m autistic and it’s not some quirky trend

Everyone has the ‘tism except for those who actually have sensory issues, shutdowns, self harm, and other barriers— then they’re just “weird” and “need to exercise” (except we’re the actually Autistic ones…)

Like, I feel like nobody is truly or 100% “neurotypical” as ppl say. Like we all have something that could be called neurodivergent, but everything should be seen as a bigger picture then just a single aspect

The term neurodivergent already exists and has its own meaning, though?? Autism is a specific type of neurodivergence with specific parameters that not everybody falls within. I don’t get how that’s an issue.

Fair, I think what I am trying to say is that nobody is truly or 100% neurotypical. Autism is a completely different thing

Everyone is not neurodivergent, neurodivergence is defined in opposition to neurotypicality and without the latter the former is meaningless

True. I’m not a psychologist so I can’t say why these phrases are used tbh.

Like, everybody has neurodivergent traits in some way shape or form.
