Hot take that shouldn’t be hot: you can’t call yourself a Christian and support the H*locaust because “the Jews killed Jesus”. The sins of all humanity killed Jesus

Please, do tell! I know the modern Catholic Church doesn’t teach antisemitism and actually believes it’s a sin to hate others because of religion, gender, race, etc

Listen I’m saying this as a Christian but it is true the Catholic Church lowkey had antisemitism in its doctrine until officially condemning it in Vatican II in the 60s, and then a bunch of Catholics got really upset about it and split off and said Vatican II isn’t real. And that one of the things many of them disliked was getting rid of antisemitism

I agree with your OP fundamentally but it’s true that, at least in conservative Christian circles, antisemitism has a really long and deep rooted history

bro doesn’t know about the crusades, the history of colonialism and its deep ties with missionary work, doesn’t know about basically every white supremacist and fascist group that’s ever existed in america who were all very deeply christian, etc. this isn’t to say christianity is solely defined by facism, racism and antisemitism because that’s not true but pretending this history isn’t real and doesn’t play a very important part in the role that christianity plays in geopolitics

especially since the way christianity has become one of the most prominent if not the most prominent global religion is through its close ties with settler colonialism and the pretty horrific ways those settler colonial states spread christianity through some pretty horrific atrocities that laid the moral, social and technological framework for things like the holocaust

my main problem with any kind of “you can’t call yourself a christian if [thing that is heavily associated with christianity for a pretty significant cultural reason]” statement is that it just a kind of no true scotsman that serves to try and shrug off some of the nastier sides of Christianity’s history and present reality without facing some of the ideas that’s are deeply ingrained in our social construction of christianity or the reality of christianity as a social force.

for example im trans so if i hear someone say “you can’t be christian if you’re transphobic”, i will feel safer around you because i know you’re making an effort but it’s not like transphobia in christian circles cropped out of nowhere and it’s also not like you can wish away the deeply rooted relationship between transphobic movements and christian cultural institutions

I do think it’s worth pointing out that the biggest and most widespread wave of American fascism imo -20th century eugenics- was really explicitly secular and kind of used this as a selling point. I don’t mean this in a “leave Christians alone 😡😡😡😡” way but I do think scientific racism has a really strong history (and current presence) in the US that kind of gets ignored even though it’s a huge part of American fascism past and present.

Again to be clear I’m not trying to argue bc I basically agree with you. I just think often because we as progressives like secularism we kinda don’t think about secular fascism and how popular it is.
