The U.S had open boarders for much of its history up until 1920s. And still thereafter for many countries until 1965. Undocumented immigration became illegal in 1965 but that literally didn’t didn’t stop millions of poor people from fleeing to the US. Through harmful trade agreements and a history of neocolonialism - the U.S has deliberately made life difficult for many people outside of our country.
I KNOW what the statement means and I still fully disagree with it. Growing up I was taught that the best thing about being an American was that literally ANYONE had the opportunity to become one - what little pride I have left in this country is quickly dying because that sentiment is being squashed on a daily basis. Make the immigration process simpler for people obviously trying to escape from dangerous situations and make a better life for themselves. Again a person cannot be illegal.
undocumented immigration was already ILLEGAL in 1965, and many other countries already had immigration laws by 1965 for a long time, and the argument about trade and neocolonialism is NOT HISTORICALLY PROVEN idk what are u on. I m immigrant my self, and i am completely aware of the immigration process and why is it important for countries to have strict immigration laws. By just making everyone a citizen will not fix any problems. double check ur facts before posting:)
