As a Christian in America, you are absolutely correct OP

This is correct. Christians in other parts of the world (Middle East, Africa, for example) are not nearly as fortunate

Catholics were for quite a while, though nowadays no. The only thing that I’m worried about are the house measures in like Washington and Oregon that target the Seal of Confession

Religions, all of them, should be left in the past. We are way too old and advanced to still believe in fairytales.

So then you’re just ignorant and don’t mind the abuse that stems from it, got it.

This has always seemed like kind of a lame take to me

Let people have faith In their life as most religions try to make people a better or more kind version of themselves

if you need religion to become a better person that makes you a bad person…some of us just know how to be moral by ourselves

Wanting extrinsic goals to better yourself does not make you a bad person. It seems kind of silly to assume that you have solved morality and know everything about being a good person.

yeah, nowhere did I say that I have “solved morality”, all I know is I don’t need a book to be a good person and if you do that makes you not a good person because why can’t you just be a good person on your own?

Everyone learns morality from those around them, back then slaves we’re widely accepted because it was the norm, and nobody thought anything better, and some people learn bad morals and find religion and change theirs

Sorry to put words in your mouth then, but it seemed like that’s what you thought when you implied that you know how to be a perfectly good person. If we still have more to learn and can become better people, then why attack others for trying to find some help with that journey?

you think it’s a BAD thing that they are trying to make it so they are mandatory reporters? you think it’s BAD that they are trying to prevent child abuse??????

As a Catholic: I know martyrdom is kind of our thing, but jfc we need to give it a rest. They put an “Irish need not apply” sign out for less than two decades like a century ago and all of a sudden our struggle is equal to the Civil Rights movement 🙄

I think it’s a complex issue to be fair, but the seal of confession in particular is among the most important religious concepts in Catholicism. Without it, less people will receive forgiveness for their sins, at least if we are right.!I’d be willing to explain it in more depth if you like!

For the record, this is my only concern about the future of the church in Americs

no, that’s a crazy take. literally all they are doing is making it so if someone reports something like sexual abuse, it legally has to be reported which is a good thing. there is no world in which that is a bad thing. for you to say that you think your desire to be right about what happens after death is more important than the safety of the children that are here right now is absolutely an insane take

+ The whole point of confession is the confidentiality of the practice. If people know that they will not be confidential, than why would you confess your wrongdoings?

I think it’s insane to suggest that what happens after death is less important than earthly matters. We are only on earth for a brief time, we are either in heaven or hell for the rest of eternity (much longer than how long we are on earth)

Catholics and Jews were targets of the KKK just as much as black people were at one point in time. Though, there were multiple different waves of the KKK and this varied.

This is not true. No group of people in America has been brutalized the way that Black people have especially by the KKK. Native Americans are a close second. You want to be included in oppression so badly because you think it will lessen your guilt over your own privilege. Womp womp.
