What about hunting for invasive species (e.g. nutria in Louisiana Bayous, or Burmese Pythons in the Everglades) for conservation purposes? Bit of an edge case, but I do mostly agree with the premise of your post. To kill an animal for the sake of killing it (not for sustenance, mercy, defense, or ecological management) is pretty despicable and pointless behavior.
