Not backed by science, just make sure they have a running water fountain
IF YOU HAVE A CAT DO NOT PUT THEIR WATER NEXT TO THEIR FOOD. Cats instinctually avoid drinking water near dead things (their food) because they feel that it’s contaminated. If your cats water is next to their food, they are probably dehydrated.

While there aren’t any scientific articles published about this specifically because no one has taken the time to fund a study on “cats water drinking habits” , there are plenty of articles saying why the separation is beneficial, why wouldn’t you do this tiny thing to make your cat potentially more comfortable? They can’t tell you if they are uncomfortable but you can do your best to support them with the knowledge you have.

Dorms, someone may choose to not have their ESA accompany them because of people saying that they -have- to separate the two

Literally just put the food on one half and the water on the other….doesn’t have to be across the USA, a few feet is fine if that’s what you’re working with
