maybe if a certain president from the 80s didn’t flood black neighborhoods with drugs, we wouldn’t need them 😬

I certainly dont agree with what happened, but reparations dont solve anything nor are they a good idea

proof? and a counter solution?

I dont have proof because its never happened before, but the idea of giving free money to the families of victims from 50 years ago just makes no sense. It would only make sense if the original people who were affected received the money, now people 3-4 generations down the line are calling for reparations when they werent even the ones who were oppressed

Counter solution: more money and effort put into public education. This is really the core of the issue, and it’s a fact that underprivileged youth do not have nearly the same academic experience as someone who lives in the suburbs. However, the problem with this solution is that it’s complex and hard to achieve. Nobody can agree on a single solution, which just kicks the can down the road and extends the timeline of the problem

it has happened before. japanese americans and native americans got reparations. germany even gave some jewish ppl reparations. it’s literally only black ppl that didn’t get anything.

I will admit I didnt know that before, but regardless, how has reparations helped either population? I know Native americans have their reservations and whatnot (which makes sense in their specific circumstance), but what would that do for black people?

i agree with the education part. i also believe black ppl should get land like it was promised. if some slave owners got reparations for “loss of property”, which is crazy btw, i find insane that black ppl got nothing

notice they left native americans reservations alone but any successful black town was flooded out or land was taken away from them. you don’t find that odd?

Yea thats obviously fucked up, but what I’m trying to say is that we’re long past the point of reparations, it should only really be given out to the original victims if at all

well considering all those ppl are dead now, it should go to their living descendant. ijs

yall literally put black people through handmaid’s tale but worse for centuries and you seriously think your opinion on whether or not they “deserve reparations” matters

white people had a 300 year head start to build generation wealth. not only that, but after black people were freed, a lot of the generation wealth they were able to build was burned down or destroyed. that doesn’t even get into the efforts to prevent them from building wealth or gaining political power. who cares if their descendants weren’t enslaved? i don’t see how they’re not victims of a violent, racist system

Because it isnt 1800 anymore, the system has changed. Maybe its not perfect, but that doesn’t mean you get free money just because you’re black

so the people who lived in a jim crow society weren’t oppressed? and regardless of how far in the lineage why is it a bad thing that folks want the injustices done to their forefathers acknowledged ?

I never said that, I don’t know where you’re getting that from. But also a big issue with reparations is the question of where the money comes from. Should taxpayers pay for it? No, they have nothing to do with it and it’s essentially stealing money from people to try to justify some wrongdoings from 200 years ago. It would be even less fair to the people living now in order to make up for a problem that doesn’t exist anymore

Btw I’m not saying the injustices shouldn’t be acknowledged in any way, but I’d argue that they already have with the turn of society this past century.
