yes, they broke up! the duffer brothers had to clarify that in an article, actually.. bc the fans took it as them just not wanting to get married

How are you confused? There was like a 5 second shot of the wedding ring sinking into the muck as they hugged. The ring was an extremely straightforward metaphor for their relationship in that scene and by showing it tossed away at their feet and sinking to be lost you really should be able to tell what’s going on with their relationship

okay follow up question: the stuff nancy said about steve, was that her saying she liked him or that she didn’t like him? If they didn’t clarify then just your opinion is fine.

okay tbh I took it that way too. But I was worried that was wishful thinking bc tbh nancy ending up with neither of them was what I was rooting for. I like her better on her own, the romance stuff bogs her character down imo

I don’t think it matters if she likes Steve or not. Her point was that he wants something that she doesn’t know if she wants as well so even if she did like him, she’s not gonna be w him rn at least because she needs to figure out herself and what she wants which follows her talking about how she liked the space she had w Jonathan and it wasn’t because of Steve

Not to mention all the context clues like them admitting they have nothing in common, were only tied together through shared trauma, and how much Nancy realized she needed space from Jonathan. Then Jonathan says he wanted to propose bc he thought it would fix everything but it won’t. He said that as a last confession bc they had broken up. He wouldn’t have said that/showed her the ring if they were still together

I guess because usually break ups are very straight forwards. Like it did feel like a break up but I kept second guessing myself bc they didn’t straight up say they were breaking up or ‘it’s over’ or whatever. I did say I felt dumb for a reason 😭 clearly I’m not the only person who needed some clarification so 🤷‍♀️
