I think it was part of being in the “trance”. We saw wills eyes turn white when he was being controlled/controlling vecna and they stayed white for like 30 seconds after. Max’s eyes were only open for a bit for she closed them again and went into the coma so that’s my guess. Even if that’s wrong we still saw how easily wills turned back to normal after being white
