I think the sequels suffer from a lot of the same problems as the prequels. A LOT of the “plot holes” and problems are explained by outside media. But the movies aren’t considered good because that critical information is just left out and you have to read “The Life and Times of Jinky Minus” in order to understand why Rey was an S-tier pilot.
I liked seven. I did. It wasn’t perfect or particularly great, but I liked it. Eight was not good. The primary tension was less interesting than the middling sub-plots, and those were drawn out too long, just like the “we ran out of gas” main storyline. Eight suffered from ideas being stretched too far to the point of becoming boring. Nine was just bad. Dialogue, story, length, all of it.
I also get confused when people compare sequels fights to prequels fights. They’re like “why are the fights so slow compared to the prequels” and it’s like dooku was canonically the best duelist in the galaxy, maul was a young sith trained by sidious himself, and grievous was a robot with 4 arms. Plus all of the Jedi were in their prime. Of course the dude trained by a failed science experiment and the girl with like 2 months of training aren’t gonna fight as well as all these trained duelists
Of course, the prequels fights are objectively better in choreography, pacing, emotional weight, etc. but I feel like it’s kind of “damned if you do, damned if you don’t.” If Rey and Kylo were out here like prime Ani vs. Obi, people would’ve called their power levels unrealistic. Because they are slow and inexperienced, people call them boring and clunky. The writers kinda shot themselves in the foot. Regardless, there are many more major problems in the sequels than this imo
I didn’t really have any issues with the duels in the sequels. They felt natural for the skill levels of the duellists. Even though Kylo had training under Luke as well as Snoke (Palpatine’s puppet) he constantly lets his emotions cloud his judgement and I liked that this showed up whenever he duelled and fought anyone.
