this would be of great use as a table center piece if a candle was out on top and progressing dripped down the sides i feel. one of those seemingly life long candle holders💀

Out of curiosity, how does one carve glass like this? How do you avoid getting glass shards in your hand? How do you prevent it from shattering? /genq

Don’t wanna glaze too much but I’m genuinely baffled that you created this with your hands, props

I appreciate it man, and honestly I’m surprised it came out as good as it did. It was looking rough while I was working on it

Did you like project an image on it or something? What tools did you use?

I think they are using this stuff that dissolves glass and painting it on

I drew the outline with a sharpie and engraved it with a Dremel while looking at a picture of Icarus

I sent a picture of what it looked like with just the outline as a comment

I used a Dremel with a diamond bit. The diamond bit works similarly to sandpaper and as it spins it sands away small amounts of glass at a time. It makes tiny shavings of glass that are too small to cut you it’s exactly like sawdust just white. And finally it doesn’t shatter because I’m adding water to make sure the bit doesn’t heat the glass up so much that it cracks. If you have more questions ask them and I’d be happy to answer them.

That’s acid etching and that works in a different way than what I did. I’ve seen that used to make flat etchings, but i wonder if you do multiple passes with stencils like spray painters use if you could get a 3D effect

Wow that’s nuts. Did you just need a super small radius bit for the detail?

That’s a really good idea I’ll look into that

It wasn’t that small it was a spherical bit that was 1/16 of an inch wide. So it was a bit bigger than the point of a ballpoint pen

If it’s more of a passion project you could start a little social media gig where you just record the process and whatnot— then you could have a little online gallery and post them as “exclusives”, put a starting bid of maybe $50-80, and then let the bid stand for a week or until next design concept.

That’s a good idea. I already have a glassblowing Instagram that I didn’t do too much with so rebranding it and doing that would be a really smart.

I hope you do well in that transformation! 🫶 I will also put out a note of caution to never forget that this is a passion (obsession can sometimes follow)— and while passions change, social media can 100% feel like a full-time job. Good luck in your creative endeavors! 💕

Thank you so much and I’ll keep that in mind. I’ll add my instagram to the next piece I post. Hopefully by then I have it reorganized
