my professor told me to try blending 2 color swatches on a small paper, like put red and blue next to each other, clean your brush and then blend them in the middle, do it a couple times with the colors you want to use

I’ve heard using linseed oil helps. It slows the drying time and makes the paint flow better. It could be the brand too, some cheaper ones get dry too quickly.
