Kind of off topic- but does anyone else ever show your friends some art and they ask you for a commission but then they expect it for free?? I've been dealing with this for a few people and 1) I need the money because I do art full time 2) I feel bad bc >

Nope bc my friends understand I deserve to be paid for my work — discounted maybe but not free It’s different if it’s a gift (tho I’ve had friends to still ask to pay me)

Friends aren’t entitled to your skills and time. But not everyone has those values (collective oriented vs individual oriented values).

I think it depends on the artist I make ceramics and I find it easy so I tell people first ones free second thing u buy but if it was a painting that’s too detailed and too much time they would be buying no matter what or who

The first thing I always say when a friend asks me if I can draw something for them is “you’d have to pay, but sure.” If I like em enough they get a discount

Gotta give em what they pay for Proper amount: well done commission Insufficient amount: insufficient quality

You can maybe feed into the collective value system and ask for favors that use their skill sets that don’t give you direct monetary benefits, but may help if indirectly. For example, taking you out for food (now you don’t have to spend money on food), asking them to fix your door or plumbing (now you won’t have you pay for those services). Stuff like that

If they literally don’t want to give anything to you it probably means they have no consistent internal value system and just feels entitled to take advantage of you. I’d just stay away from those people
