It should be taken gradually. It should not be this drastic and sudden. I’m shocked it’s even possible because that’s how unhealthy it is. If this was medically done, it’s medication assisted anorexia and pure starvation. This person should be dead based on how fast they lost the weight.
Let’s just do some simple math. 300lbs in 12mo Means 25lbs a month Means .86lbs a day. That’s almost one pound a day. That’s extraordinarily unhealthy and no amount of weight should be lost like that. It’s starvation and your body is using muscle and fat and every aspect of your body by losing that weight. It’s consuming it for energy as the body is starving. I’m just saying medically you shouldn’t be able to do this and live. Downvote me all you want but I’m just realistic about it
I’m not saying it’s impossible, I’m saying it’s extremely unhealthy. I know the statistics of it as I’ve worked in many ED RTCs before closely with dietitians. There’s also a reason this person gained so much weight in the first place, most likely needing extreme therapy and assistance in their ability to lose weight. However going from 600-300 IN A YEAR IS NOT HEALTHY.
not necessarily. maintenance calories for someone at 600 pounds is roughly 3,500 calories. a deficit of ~2,000 a day combined with moderate exercise would result in significant weight loss, especially at 600 pounds. i certainly wouldn’t call that unhealthy. you’re definitely right this rate isn’t sustainable long term, but losing 6 pounds a week isn’t unusual for an obese person.
the larger, heavier, higher in weight you are the easier it is to lose weight because of the amount of calories you’d need to maintain your weight. just as #6 said, if yr maintenance calories is ~3500 (which is very high) and you start eating ~2000 (normal depending on activity level, sex, and height) you will lose weight fairly quickly. couple that with some exercise and yr eating in a deficit as well as burning calories, speeding up the process.
same thing for someone of a healthy weight. lets say 5’7 150lbs and their maintenance is ~1700. is they were to all of a sudden start eating ~800 cals, they would lose weight fairly quickly. granted, that is also very unhealthy. but lets say they instead eat ~1500. they would lose weight, but much slower
in the case of op and being 600lbs, eating a normal amount of calories would make them lose weight quickly because they would need so much calories to maintain their high weight. someone cannot maintain 600lbs on a normal, healthy calorie intake for their height, sex, and activity. it’s just not possible.
