she really breaks the mold for figure skating; her skating looks like she’s dancing, and she frequently performed to pop music, so it really broadened who is interested her— it brought in a lot of new fans to the sport. people who previously hadn’t paid attention to figure skating now do because of her. also, she didn’t change her individuality to conform to the mold: she kept her hair dyed and unique, she kept her piercings in, etc. she also returned to the sport for passion, not just victory
