Getting paired with roommates blindly isn’t for the weak. One of them is younger (we are juniors & seniors for context and in an apartment) and it’s obvious it’s her first time living by herself. Continued in commentsShe has no sense of personal space and doesn’t condense her items at all. We have community shared items and she has a whole cart of personal items. Her boyfriend is always over without her announcing to us when he’s going to be there so it’s a jumpscare. She also is ALWAYS in the kitchen. I feel awkward leaving my room or even going to try to make food because it’s busy. And she refuses to put up her dishes after they’re dry, I’ve seen the same plate sit there for DAYS.
Now here’s my problem: I don’t know if my other roommates are aware of her behavior or not or if I’m just easily irritated. But I’m also a crippling people pleaser and don’t want to say anything, even though it’s actively effecting my life. Do I just grow a pair and try to ask her to communicate better or suck it up and find times to get my stuff done?
Your roommate sounds exactly like mine last year. Like terrifyingly similar, they may be the same person haha I’m also like you and I was a major people pleaser and very scared to say anything and I procrastinated too hard on bringing it up so when it finally was, it was bad I started by asking my other roommate how they felt about her boyfriend being over and we realized we felt the same
We both talked to our RA and then the RA tried having a meeting 1:1 with the bad roommate but she kept missing the meeting. RA gave up on trying to reach her 1:1 so we scheduled a meeting with all of us (which bad roommate forgot, scheduled something into it, and then was very very late) We got through it, but it was helpful not thinking I was alone. I was scared for literally half the year that I was alone but it turned out I wasn’t. It doesn’t hurt to try asking, take small steps
I was worried about being “that” person too. Especially cause at the beginning of the year when we talked about agreements with people staying over, she sounded like she was alright with my bad roommate’s boyfriend. So I was sitting there worried I was the only one and I was gonna make it all about me. However, you live there too, you pay for there too, and you have a right to your space and the people who are brought into it
