I’m sorry but if you have depression you need to adjust to having roommates or find roommates just as dirty. It’s not fair. You can’t rent an apartment and not want any responsibility inside the apartment.

if you don't like doing dishes use plastic and only 1 pot and 1 pan, hold yourself accountable. If you're not gonna clean up after yourself order food. If you're not gonna take out the trash have a personal one in your room and leave communal stuff alone. No joke this person cleaned their room instead of all the bs they left in the kitchen... that's not okay. Your roommate is not your mom or your family so adjust.

True like I apologize to my roommate and make it clear that I’m setting a schedule for myself to take out the trash and clean twice a week which they see on my whiteboard, and ensure my shit NEVER touches their side of the dorm! It can be so hard but like you can find ways to manage it without pissing others off or anything!

As someone who has MDD this is 100% the right perspective to have. I may struggle to take care of myself once in a while, but I would never let that affect my rm and our shared space. My rm on the other hand goes through a break up and uses her depression as an excuse for MONTHS not to do anything. Doesn’t even apologize or take accountability, just says “I was so depressed”… b*tch you’re not the only one here struggling, but at least I clean up after myself and don’t get in your way

One of my roommates is so rude and passive aggressive for no reason. I understand you’re angry at the world and unhappy with your life but don’t let your dishes get moldy in the kitchen just because you have a lot going on. And there’s no reason to take your anger out on your roommates. She also only messes with guys who are nearly 30 and she just turned 19 less than a week ago

I was so depressed a major break down to not make any mess I only eat take out and throw them away while I’m drunk cause that gave me a high to do something but bring me even lower is depressing is an excuse to be dirty no but can it really destroy ur life yes it can I can be depressed and don’t even have enough energy to even brush my teeth the person probably left a messy situations or so it is not your responsibility it’s theirs but it wouldn’t hurt to lend a hand here and there it can help.

this!! i also had a system in place w my roommates where we’d just communicate if we’re too overwhelmed/swamped w schoolwork to keep up so someone else could cover instead of the apartment getting nasty (ofc w the expectation being that there’s a reasonable balance and frequency of asking another person to cover their chores)

I communicate. Asked her to clean pointed out exactly what I was talking about. Asked her to do it soon. She did it 5 days later(reminded her once), she did it half assed. But most of the time she says she’s gonna do it but never does.

I disagree ask me how ik😭 nah don’t. But obviously it’s a spectrum but that doesn’t change the fact that she chose to rent, chose to go to school here (college town), but doesn’t want any responsibility that comes with it and that’s not fair to the ppl who has to pick up the slack. She could be my 13th reason but I got my shit together and a system in place BEFORE I came here I can stay in a good mental. So again it’s not fair to me.

We are trying a chore chart personally I don’t need one but they did (I have multiple roommates) and it changed absolutely nothing. They picked their own schedule and simply just won’t clean. But it’s not rlly the communal chores that’s a problem. I’ll clean the kitchen, they will go cook something and then that’s it. Ingredients stay out, nothing wiped down, dishes out for weeks, trash and scraps left. They just cook then up and leave.

But idk when I’m overwhelmed I do my best to make sure my actions aren’t also overwhelming others so like with ur system it would be me helping them out w nothing to show for it. Which I already have to do.

It sounds like this person has a genuine disability and needs help. People with depression don't neglect their lives for fun or because they're "angry at the world," they do it because they physically can't. Please educate yourself, it's not that hard

Depression is a failure of executive functioning and dopamine regulation, not a motor deficit. They are not 'physically' incapable of washing a dish-they just lack the drive to initiate the task. Throwing around terms like 'genuine disability' to excuse someone turning a communal space into a health issue for other occupants just proves you don't actually understand the mechanics of the illness you're trying to defend. Ironic.

Bro what the fuck 😭 I was exaggerating, I wasn't saying they literally lack motor functions. It sounds like you just wanna sound smart and dismiss people's real world issues. I'm not saying people shouldn't be responsible for themselves, but for many, it's not easy as a life hack or a pep talk. Backpedaling to 'I was exaggerating' right after telling people to 'educate themselves' is certainly a choice. Rich, coming from you, lol. I didn't zero in on one word; I zeroed in on the excuse you (tried) used to absolve someone of basic accountability. No one said a pep talk cures depression. But having a mental illness doesn't give you a free pass to subject roommates to a biohazard.

And when did I say having mental illness gave anyone a free pass for anything? You're using a lot of words you seem to not know the meaning of. I was saying their roommate needed help and that depression isn't just "being angry at the world." When did I say she had a free pass? Still not beating the "I wanted to sound smart" allegations.

Oh and yeah, depression IS a genuine disability and it CAN be an excuse for people not being able to take care of themselves or their spaces. That does NOT make it a "free pass," it means they're sick and in need of serious help. That doesn't mean they don't have responsibility for their actions, but it's more complicated than someone just needing to willpower their way out of it. It's a serious medical condition that requires a lot of support and understanding.

Saying someone is physically incapable of a task inherently removes their accountability for it. That is a free pass. It’s so fucking hilarious that youre accusing me of not knowing the meaning of words immediately after you were forced to admit you didn't know the difference between physical inability and executive dysfunction.

You're allowed to be frustrated with someone for being unable to care for themselves and a communal space, but being mad at them and telling them it's just "being angry at the world" does less than nothing to help your situation. Except you're a yik yak user, so obviously your thought process is not nuanced enough to be able to do that.

Saying it CAN be an excuse but doesn't mean they don't have responsibility is an oxymoron. If an illness is used as an excuse to completely avoid a required roommate obligation, it is functioning as a free pass. No one argued they don't need support; I argued that their need for support doesn't negate their accountability for creating a biohazard. You just agreed with me.

Her original statement would make 100% sense (some one diagnose with depression) if instead of “physical” she put “mental” there many forms one were people genuinely can’t bring themselves to do what’s best for there health. No it’s not a “free pass” but if that’s what she actually has that shit is serious, but for the roommate going through that I would say talk to her about how uncomfortable u are with her cleaning and that may actually give her the push they need or tell property manager

I love how you assumed I'm a girl for some reason. I exaggerated to show the weight of how debilitating depression can be. It can really feel like you're physically incapable of doing things even though your body is literally capable and the block is in your brain. But a brain block can be as real and debilitating as a physical block.
