basically what everyone else said about not leaving a cat confined to a small room, that would be very cruel but despite common beliefs you can train cats! they're just a little more stubborn then dogs lol

Spray bottles aren’t the best way to train cats- you have to redirect. Spray bottles just cause distrust; most cats just take it as you being mean. Positive reinforcement works the best- like putting them elsware and praising them. Harder but not impossible🫶 I get the anger 100% ppl gotta train they’re animals

my cat goes on the counters and she is a very stubborn and sassy cat so there is no stopping her, but she doesn’t go on the stove. either way i clean both because even though i do spray my cat and tell her to get off, there’s no stopping her from going on the counter when i’m not home

It’s not necessarily a matter of letting cats on the counter, it’s more of cats love getting places they aren’t supposed to be. Sometimes putting tinfoil on the counters can help, many cats don’t like the way it feels so they learn not to jump on the counters. I would also recommend wiping down the stove and counters with a Clorox wipe whenever you’re gonna cook just to keep it clean in case the cat gets up there

cats hate aluminum foil for some reason so you can leave some on the stove top when nobody is using it obviously to prevent the cat from walking across it

how old is the cat? bc that also depends if he’s older yea he ain’t gonna want to listen but if he’s younger spray bottle might work

I think he’s about a year old, so that may work

Leaving a young cat confined to a single room for presumably hours while she’s gone would be horrible. The cat definitely needs to be trained to not go on top of counters (I recommend a spray bottle), but trapping a cat in a room for hours at a time is not the solutiom

I grew up with many cats, and the only cat we weren’t able to train not to climb things was a purebred Bengal cat. And that’s just because it’s basically impossible to get a Bengal to do anything you want it to do, they’re very stubborn and they need to climb. Basically any other cat you can train to keep off of things

I don’t know anything abt cats, I’m a dog person. I wish she would train her cat instead because when she’s gone I am home and feel responsible for an animal that is not my own. She is gone for more than 8 hrs sometimes and its definitely been frustrating that my concerns are not taken seriously in a shared space :/

Thanks for saying this, idk how to ask her to work on it without making her feel attacked. esp bc I’ve already brought it to her attention 😭 hopefully I can leave instead, idk abt living with a cat if this doesn’t get figured out

ultimately this is her responsibility and I'm sorry you're the one suffering bc she's a bad pet owner if you live in a dorm or apartment you might be able to switch to a new room maybe? otherwise if it's bad enough and you have a reasonable landlord you could also report her either way I hope this gets sorted out!

thankfully cats are very self sufficient so they won’t really be affected if they’re left alone for 8ish hours occasionally (depending on the cat). it’s honestly really hard to train a cat not to go on a counter, i know my cat wouldn’t GAFFF and would still go on it anyway. while it’s definitely frustrating that her cat goes on the counter & stove, there’s really not much she can do about it since it can just go on the counter when yall aren’t there. but i’d definitely talk to her and ask her —

and ask her to frequently clean the counter so you don’t have to deal with it when ur cooking ! :)

i told my roommates to spray my cat if she’s ever misbehaving. it’s just water plus my cat is so evil sometimes
