Why does my roommate think she needs to adopt a dog on FINALS WEEK can you not just wait a few extra days when you move out????? Not to mention we’re in small ass rooms and it’s a big dog so I know it’s gonna hate it here

More than likely a trip to the RA should shut that down. However, if that is not an option, I would make it VERY clear that you will have NOTHING to do with this dog for the remainder of your time there so she is completely on her own to care for and clean after that dog. I’m sure she did not think how she would get her finals done outside of “my roommate will be there so it’s fine” so have fun watching her scramble for alternatives

unless it’s done through OSD and registered as an ESA or is a dog who is trained and registered to be a service dog- you should to the RA for sure, because casual pets are not allowed on campus point blank (it sucks because my roommate and i wanted a cat but it didn’t work out 😔)

Take a picture of the dog and show it to reslife. She will try to do stupid shit to hide the dog. That dog deserves a stable home and a good owner that isn’t keeping it illegally, just for her own entertainment

It isn’t really illegal since she has the requirements for an emotional support animal. She originally was gonna have it for only 1 day which was fine but now she’s trying to keep it for a week because she’s convinced someone will try to adopt it before she does, even though it’s been at the shelter for about half a year

I keep trying to tell her it’s probably best to wait a few more days but everything I say goes from one ear out the other

This is why it’s important you tell her you’ll have nothing to do with the dog and it’s her responsibility alone. She clearly has no plan for how she’ll have this dog there for a week and will definitely try to have you “watch” (read: dump it on you to do her finals) it. If she won’t listen to reason then she’s on her own for figuring it out.

I don’t know if this is the case for all shelters but I know some will do a thing where you can like “reserve” an animal until a specific time. I feel like that’s a very reasonable thing for her to try and do

this is a global group so whatever office you said in your first line probably isn't what everyone else has bc i've never heard of that and i have an ESA at my school lol

She already called yesterday and they said they don’t do holds on animals

I’ve already told her I won’t be in the room enough to dog-sit it and that she’ll have to find someone to watch it when she goes to work. I’ll ask her when her finals are and if they’re in-person or not

I’d also add that she’s responsible for any damages the dog makes if she plans to leave it in the room alone at any point.

OSD equivalent is the office of student affairs that mostly deal with accommodations for classes or housing

I have gone into the process for an ESA. I MORE than had the requirements. But UNTIL you get those legal documents from a therapist saying why you need to have an esa and you register the specific animal with the school, it’s illegal. Doesn’t matter
